Wood Works: “The Sønderho Bridal Trilogy” Scandinavian traditional music*
*arr. by the Danish String Quartet
Wood Works is the name of a project by the Danish String Quartet, culminating with an album of the same name. The objective was to arrange Nordic folk melodies for classic string quartet. “We believe that we have found a niche, somewhere between traditional folk music and classical music , using our strengths as a string quartet to showcase the treasures of our Nordic music tradition” – this from the ensemble’s web site.
The Prelude concert will feature works from this album, including melodies connected with weddings, Easter and shepherding. The arrangements are simple, so that the folk attributes of the original melodies are not lost. Nevertheless, this does not prevent the songs from acquiring a “sheen of modernity” which shines through in the individual pieces, giving the melodies a universal character.
